Important Announcements

Are leaders born, or are they made? While some student-athletes have the characteristics to be a leader, leadership is a learned skill.  Most captains receive little to no training on how to be a team leader.  With the help of Michigan State University’s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports and the Michigan High School Athletic Association, this course was created to help develop high school team leaders.  Student-athletes are prominently featured via on-screen hosts and captain interviews throughout the ten-segment curriculum, while participants learn about leadership skills and reflect on and the important role of the team captain

Do you know of any Gilroy High students that you know would benefit being involved in after school sports?  All Spring Sports are looking to keep building their programs, so please send all types our way.  (Of course they have to have a GPA 2.00 or above, no more than 1 "N" and no F's for their 1st semester grade)

We are starting this year Badminton (it was unofficial last year) and Boys tennis  - so we are looking not to take from other sports but to get those student-athletes that are not doing anything.

No experience is needed (our coaches are that good).

Have them contact the coaches directly or have them come see me in the ASB office during brunch, lunch or after school.

Thank you everyone for your planning, decorating, supporting and cheering on the streets of our town to make it happen.  What a turnout!!!

Thank you to all the alumni, coaches and families that lined the streets today.  What an amazing experience.  I hope more pictures are shared showing the pure joy of our student athletes and supporters from today.  Today showed why we love living and working in Gilroy.

The San Francisco 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week award for week three goes to Jubenal Rodriguez (pictured in the white shirt) from Gilroy High School in Gilroy, CA.

Award given September 15

The third year head coach says that when he isn’t busy with football he likes finding time to get away from the sport and enjoy life. Fishing on the lake gives him a chance to get away and find some peace and quiet to clear his head from the busy life of a coach.

On winning the award, Coach Rodriguez said “It is an honor. Charlie Wedemeyer is such an inspiration to anyone who has been through adversity in life.” Coach Rodriguez also gave a large amount of the credit for winning the award to his coaching staff saying “My coaching staff is the real award winner in my eyes because of the sacrifice and time they have put in. I know they will be very excited.”

As our Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week, Jubenal Rodriguez will receive a $1,000 grant for the Gilroy High School football program from the 49ers Foundation. As part of this award, he will also receive two tickets to a 49ers home game where he will be recognized on the field. Coach Roberts will also be invited to visit the SAP Performance Facility to watch a closed practice where 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will officially present him with his award. Coach Rodriguez will be featured on the 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Report On Sunday's at 6 & 10 PM on NBC Sports California and re-broadcast throughout the week.

Congratulations, Coach Rodriguez!

The football team capped off an extraordinary season with a 38-21 win over the Menlo Knights for the Division 5 title! 11th grader #2 Joe Barnes scored an amazing 5 touchdowns in the game. Our kicker #11 and 10th grader, Sam Zamaripas, nailed 3 PAT''s and scored the first 3 points of the game with a 25 yard FG.

# 8 QB Brandon Weiler 11th, #3  WR Max Pierce 12th, # 32 LB Spencer Soares 12th and #5 DE Tony Andrade 12th, with key plays during the game.

The victory was win number 13 with ZERO losses making this the first undefeated football team in school history! This was also the first FB CCS title in school history.

Cheer, band and Sports Med also on hand to support the team along with hundreds of fans. Thank you for your support.

The team finished ranked #8 overall in the 130+ school Central Coast Section  which includes most schools from King City to San Francisco. After the win, the team moved up 35 places in the state ranking to the top 175 in a state that fields over 1000 teams in various divisions. AMAZING! Coach Rodriguez and his staff truly did a fantastic job of getting this team to its level of success.

Several players were selected to the All Monterey Bay League Team:

  •  #2 Joe Barnes Offensive player of the year.
  • #44 Andrew Castro Defensive player of the year.
  • #9 Alex Felix Rookie of the Year.

Congrats to fellow Monterey Bay League Champs and CCS Champs for their wins as well! The MBL won 3 out of 5 divisions....Gilroy USD good for 2 out of 5 CCS Champions!

  • Division 4- #2 Christopher HS over  #1 ranked Leland HS 24-7...Congrats Coach Pierleoni!
  • Division 1 -# 2 Salinas HS over heavily favored (then 12-0) #1 Milpitas HS 25-18

MBL Championships

Saturday, 10/28/17 @ Toro Park in Salinas

Gilroy High’s girls and boys cross country teams are heading to the CCS meet!

On Saturday the Mustangs not only clinched the MBL Pacific Division championship titles, they also received the coveted Avis Kelley trophy for having the best overall program. The team had 23 of its 27 runners beat their personal bests.  Three of the runners now have Toro course average mile times under 6 minute pace.  Eleven runners are averaging under 7 minute pace and another eleven average under 8 minute pace.  Indeed perseverance and consistent hard work are paying off.

Both varsity teams are heading to the CCS Cross Country Championships and brought home MBL Pacific Division championship titles.   The lady Mustangs earned three All League patches by placing in the top 7 of our division.  Maddie Eastus placed third with a time of 20:22. Aphrodite Ayala placed 5th with a time of 20:36 and Serenity Rodriguez placed 7th at 21:26.  While three of our boys (Chris Chavez, Noe Serafio, Elias Chavez-Hernandez) brought home All League patches. Senior Chris Chavez celebrated meeting his under 17 minutes goal with a time of 16:58.  Breaking the 17 minute barrier at the gruelling Toro Park course was the reinforcement the team needed to continue the training required to excel in two weeks at CCS.

Both boys and girls froshsoph teams demonstrated the depth of the Mustang program by earning Pacific Division championship titles as well.  The young lady Mustangs had the best team score for both divisions of the MBL with five runners placing in the top ten overall.  Once again Angelina Gonzalez lead the field with a time of 21:45.  Anna Turk placed 2nd at 22:11 soon followed by Regina Perez (5th at 23:01), and Isabella Cordich (7th at 23:06).  In the boys’ race Anthony Rodriguez placed 16th overall with a time of 19:18.

If you see a pack of runners sprinting the trails at Christmas Hill park or running the levy, give a honk or cheer to acknowledge a job well done!  They represented Mustang Nation with pride, honor, and good sportsmanship. May the horse be with you!

Hey Water Polo Family,

For those not connected to the outcome of today's final, the girl Mustangs took it to the Cougars from Catalina. Despite only being able to squeak out two one goal victories during the regular season, driving an expectation of a third close game, our ladies in blue thoroughly dominated from the opening whistle. With two perfectly executed plays in the first two offensive sequences, each capped off by wicked shots out of the 2M spot by Erika Cates, the Mustangs were ahead 2-0 just 50 seconds into the first stanza. Employing a "fronting" strategy against last year's sophomore of the year, GHS all but shut down any offensive threat their opponent had. As such, and never taking their foot off the gas, the score read 6-1 when the first period ended.

With a dream start to the game in place, the Mustangs did not waver from their game plan and won going away 13-5. It was truly a great team game on both offense and defense. The scoring was well rounded with Erika getting 4 goals, KK Brolin and Ashley Harding getting 3 goals, D Barnett tossing in two goals and Ellie Pickford scoring once. Overall, it was a near-perfect execution of the strategy the team came up with and proved to all that watched that GHS can play some serious polo.

As a coach, I dream of getting thrown into the pool (ritual afforded the winning team in a championship game). And when it happened today and I screamed liked a 6 year old on Christmas morning, I am sure no one could have doubted how proud and genuinely happy I was for these athletes.

In addition to this new banner for our gymnasium wall, we also qualify for the upcoming CCS water polo tournament.

Love it!!

Center Meet #3

Wednesday, 10/18/17 @ Pinto Lake in Watsonville

Consistent hard work, perseverance, and beautiful running weather set the stage for an incredible performance at Wednesday’s meet where  Gilroy High’s cross country teams earned 25 personal records!

Varsity boys’ Chris Chavez and Noe Serafio both smashed the 17 minute mark running 16:31 and 16:32; both boys were averaging a 5 ½ minute mile pace.  While their teammate, Lucas Bundros, flew past the 18 minute mark by running a 17:39.  Six more of the boys broke into the 19 minutes (averaging around a 6:20 mile pace): Anthony Rodriguez (19:06), Carlos Mendoza (19:37), Valentino Esposito (19:42), Dominic Esposito (19:47), Christopher Lopez (19:48), and Cruz Garcia (19:59).

Varsity girls’ Maddie Eastus beat her previous best time of 19:56 with a 19:41.  Teammate Aphrodite Ayala crushed her previous time of 21:03 with a new PR (personal record) of 20:10. Senior Briseida Perez ran a PR of 20:58 almost a full minute faster than her previous Pinto Lake race.  And four more of the girls broke into the 21 minute range: Serenity Rodriguez (21:01), Angelina Gonzalez (21:13), Marianna Bundros (21:15), and Anna Turk (21:41).

The cheers, hugs, high fives and utter joy of a job well done were the perfect way to finish the Center Meet season.  Hard work has built endurance and perseverance has built mental strength.  These qualities will make them tough competitors in the MBL Championships on Saturday, October 28th.

Gilroy High completes regular season

Two years ago, Gilroy High School was unable to field a boys water polo team. Last year, they overcame that, but were unable to win a game. This year, not only did they assemble a group of young men eager to learn the game, the put together both a Varsity and a JV team. This team was comprised of 18 players, 10 of whom are freshmen. And more importantly they competed in every game, winning six of their fifteen games. Capping the season was their finale against Harbor. Riddled by illness and injury, the boys from Gilroy were down five Varsity players, two of whom were starters. But despite that, the Mustangs, relying heavily on those freshmen, won a thriller 10-9. Down for most of the game, senior captain Adam Thompson decided to have his best game of the season. Often double teamed and never left alone, Thompson scored 7 goals, including the game winner with a minute to play. Also scoring huge and timely late game goals were senior captain Nick Marquez and freshmen Race Thompson and Grant Rocha. Needing to stop the Pirates team, the Mustangs clamped down on the opponent's 2M player stealing the ball. Wisely calling timeout, the Mustangs scripted a keep away approach and ran the clock to zero, securing the victory. There will be no playoffs for the Mustangs, no CCS bids, but don't think for a second that this wasn't a landmark season. And its only going to get better.

On the girls side of things, two years ago Gilroy did have a team. While they were only able to muster 3 wins, it was clear that the necessary enthusiasm was in place. And there was a cast of freshmen and sophomore committed to the team, and to the process. Now many of those girls are seniors; there are five seniors on the team lead by captains Katelyn Brolin, Erika Cates and Ashley Harding, and it may just well be their turn. Despite entering the final regular season game 16-4 overall, 11-0 in league and on a 7 game win streak, the girls from Gilroy were not going to look past Harbor. With a suffocating defense and a clear speed advantage, the Mustangs jump out to an early lead. With the halftime lead at 9-3, the outlook was never in doubt. As is a common occurrence, scoring was lead by Erika Cates and Ashley Harding, who had 5 and 4 goals respectively. For the season each of this dynamic duo has scored 77 goals. Also scoring against Harbor were DIllania Barnett (2 goals) and KK Brolin (1 goal). When the final horn sounded and the score 12-6, the GHS squad has completed an unbeaten regular season, claiming at worse co-champions. They can hold the title of sole champions and an automatic CCS spot with two more victories; in the upcoming 4 team Monterey Bay League playoffs. As the #1 seed in the playoff, they will play the #4 seed on Thursday, October 26. If they win that game, then they head to the final against the winner of the preliminary game. The final is slated for Saturday, October 28.

Center Meet #2

Wednesday, 10/4/17 @ Toro Park in Salinas

Gilroy High’s cross country teams are leading the pack on the trails claiming victory to 4 out of the 5 Center Meet races.   Earning the top times in their races has both boys and girls varsity teams currently ranking number one in the MBL Pacific division.  Placing first as a team, boys varsity had a score of 46.  They were lead by senior Chris Chavez who finished first overall with a time of 17:19 smashing his previous course time of 18:56. Girls varsity also placed 1st as a team with a score of 30. Once again their pack was led by freshman Maddie Eastus  with a time of 20:34, a 30 second improvement over her previous Toro time.

The day’s successes continued into the lower divisions.  The JV girls stole 1st place by finishing in the top 4 spots.  Freshman Anna Turk dominated the competition by finishing a full minute before any of her competitors. JV boys placed 3rd out of the 7 teams in their race.  Senior Carlos Mendoza was their leader who placed 3rd overall with a time of 20:27. The Frosh Soph boys performed in the finale placing 1st as a team with a score of 25.  They were led by sophomore Elias Chavez-Hernandez who is consistently running the 3 miles under 18 minutes.

Overall the team earned 19 personal records on the Toro course that is known for testing a runner’s endurance with its steep hills.  Assistant coaches Jose Cruz and Justin Lucas were beaming with pride as they discussed the results with the athletes.  High fives, and pats on the backs were handed out to all the athletes for a job well done or should we say... a job well RUN!

Week in Review

In the MBL, the league champion is decided by the league records and the CCS bid is decided by playoff. Thus, the girls have mathematically wrapped up the league title with only two games to go. Though there will be no resting on laurels as the girls shoot for even bigger goals (unbeaten regular season, qualifying for CCS).

The boys must now win each of their last 3 games to have a chance to qualify for the playoffs.

Girls vs Catalina, W 13-12

The girls water polo team from Gilroy High extended their unbeaten league record on Tuesday with yet another thrilling victory over rival Santa Catalina, 13-12. The Mustangs started quickly, jumping to a 3-1 lead and looked to be in total control with an 8-5 lead when the halftime buzzer sounded. But the Cougars were not going to go away quietly as they outscored the Mustangs 4-2 in the 3rd period to only trail 10-9. But the will to win was simply too great as Gilroy controlled the clock and never relinquished the lead, outlasting their foe. The game featured solid team defense, what is fast becoming a defining characteristic of this team. On the offensive side of the pool, Erika Cates and Dillania Barnett came up big, scoring seven and three goals respectively. Rounding out the scoring were two goals by Ashley Harding and a single tally by KK Brolin. The Mustangs hope to continue their quest for perfection when both the boys and girls visit Alvarez on Thursday.

Boys vs. Alvarez, 2-4

In what turned out to be a defensive struggle, the Mustangs were unable to conjure up much offense. Fighting illness (two starters out) and fatigue, the boys battled but came up on the short end of this one. Nathaniel had yet another great game in the cage, but it was not enough.

Girls vs. Alvarez, W 21-3

Despite also having a broadly ill and injured squad, the girls took care of business without too much fuss against the Eagles. With a counter-attack that Alvarez could not defend, the Mustangs scored many uncontested goals.

From Dr. Sanchez:

Mustang Nation!

Friday was truly amazing for Mustang football fans. It was standing room only on the cramped Cougar visitor's side of the stadium, but that didn't keep faithful Mustang fans from enjoying a game for the ages.  Both teams undefeated going into the game and the league title at stake as well as the Severance Bell. The Cougars averaging 40 pts per game were shut down by the stingy Mustang defense. Big plays on both ends of the ball including key interceptions paved the way for a 24-6 win. Congrats to the players and Coach Jubenal Rodriguez/Staff for preparing the team for one of the biggest games of the season. The Mustangs controlled the game from start to finish. Both teams displayed excellent sportsmanship before during and after the game.

Click below for more details and check school loop later for some great shots from the game. In the meantime remember that every day of the week that ends in the letter "y" is a great day to be a Mustang!

Hey Water Polo family,

What a great week we had! As far as games played, we went 6-0. And with Thursday's Senior Night, I suspect that many of you, like me, have a smile on your face, a bounce in your step and some extra joy in your heart. It doesn't get better than that...

Thanks!!

With four HOME games (and two VISITOR games at GHS), we relied on many parents (and our AD) to pull off a seamless desk. As always, it doesn't work without you, so thanks. Beyond that and requiring very special recognition are Yvonne Thompson, Susan Cates and all the helpful parents that orchestrated a wonderful (and delicious) Senior Night last night. The bad news is that the bar is now set so high it will be difficult for future teams to compare... good problem to have, I guess.

Last Week's Games

Girls versus Catalina, W 15-14 (OT)

In a battle of unbeatens, Gilroy tore victory from the jaws of defeat in a crazy, exhilarating thriller. In what probably should not have been as close a game as it was, Gilroy suffered from a few too many turnovers, allowing the Cougars to build up confidence that they could play with our mighty Mustangs. Late in the 4th quarter, our girls were down 10-12 and had to truly dig deep. After trading goals, the Mustangs were able to tighten the score to 12-13 with 44 seconds left. Attempting to calm his team, the coach of Catalina called timeout. But when play resumed, Gilroy stole the ball in 8 seconds, prompting Gilroy to take their own timeout. With a mapped out plan in hand, the girls executed to perfection, scoring to tie the game and force overtime. With 2 three minute stanzas to follow, GHS scored two quick goals to end the first OT up by 2. After surrendering a goal in the second OT, the clock worked its way towards :00. Having stolen the ball with 15 seconds left, the game was all but sealed in the favor of Gilroy. But a miscommunication led to Catalina getting the ball back with :06 left. The best the Cougars could come up with was a half pool shot that was destined for a score until Cheyenne Cates tipped it away at the last moment in what is without a doubt, the best and most important save of the season. Wow! Scoring was led by KK Brolin and Ashley Harding, each with 4 goals. Never underestimate the will to win.

Boys versus York, W 17-6

In a rematch of the boys first victory of the season, our Mustangs controlled the tempo and the score throughout. Utilizing a stifling drop defense, the boys from York got very few shots off. And those that they did get off had little chance to get by the great goalie play (again!) from Nathaniel Cazares. Scoring was lead by Adam Thompson with 5 and Nicky Franco with 4. But also breaking into the scoring column were Ethan Novak, Niklas Marquez (2), Logan Flores and Lucas Bissell.

Girls versus Harbor, W 14-5

After recovering from Tuesday's crazy game, the girls from Gilroy settled down and played a solid all around game. With lightning speed and reactions, the girls quickly asserted themselves. The game was out of reach by half time and Gilroy cruised on the back of 7 goals by Erika Cates and 4 goals by Ashley Harding. Scoring was rounded out by Izzy Prieto (2) and KK Brolin (1).

Boys versus Harbor, W 15-3

With Senior Night exuberance fueling the Mustangs, our boys came out flying. With a high energy offense and a wall of goalie in the name of Nathaniel Cazares, the boys made life easy on themselves. With no JV game to follow, substitutions were frequent and many of our younger, less experienced players got deep into the action, including birthday boy, Dane Deacon, who thrilled the crowd when he scored. Scorers were lead by Adam with 5.

Girls versus Monterey, W 18-5

Our girls remained perfect in league play, using this game as a tune up for next Tuesday's re-match with Catalina. Using a well orchestrated counter attack, Monterey really had little chance. Scoring was well balanced, with Erika Cates getting 5, Ashley Harding and Dillania Barnett 3 eacah, KK Brolin, Izzy Prieto and Hannah Hoeptner 2 each and Ellie Pickford a single tally.

Boys versus Monterey,  W 10-9

I guess the boys wanted to get in the mix of thrilling games. Revenging the one-sided loss of the first meeting of these two teams, Gilroy took an early lead 6-2 half way through the 2nd period. At no point in the game did our Mustangs trail, and once again, Nathaniel was stellar in the cage. While Adam once again lead scorers with 3, it was the younger Thompson, Race, that scored two big goals, including the last one to seal the game. Our boys now control their own fate with respect to qualifying for the season-ending league tournament.

a. Perform Community Service for a pre-approved nonprofit agency (see the list on the website).

b. Or, for an agency not on the pre-approved list, obtain prior approval from the Community Service Coordinator. Turn in a request for Community Service approval form TWO weeks prior to the activity. 2. Students must use the official GUSD School Community Service Time Sheet. Students’ timesheets must be signed by their parent or guardian.

3. All community service work must be completed outside of school hours.

4. Paid work will not be considered for Community Service hours.

Students must earn ten hours in at least two of the following categories: Senior Citizens Young Children Disabled Citizens School Related The Environment The Homeless Literacy Animal Care Promoting Health and Physical Fitness Promoting the Arts and Culture

7. Community Service credit will not be given for service performed for a parent or a relative.

8. Approved Community Service completed during weekends or vacation time will not exceed more than 8 hours per day.

9. Service hours will not be given for any high school club or team meeting.

10. Hours earned for after school or weekend training or planning sessions may count towards community service when the training results in actual volunteer service towards the community. (For example: serving on the Relay for Life Committee, etc.)

11. Service hours completed during the school year for youth camps (or similar service) will be limited to no more than 8 hours per day, and a total of 15 hours per camp. This includes service completed during winter and spring break.

12. Community Service credit will not be granted for recruitment, membership building or teaching about an organization or its beliefs, philosophy, or mission. For example, Community Service credit will be granted for volunteer work performed for a church providing childcare, directing recreational activities, helping feed or clothe those in need, or providing other community services, but credit will not be granted for teaching about religious beliefs or for organizing or participating in religious ceremonies.

13. The organization receiving service always has the option of not signing a time sheet if the student’s job performance is not satisfactory.

14. Students entering Gilroy Unified School District will have their Community Service Hours prorated at 20 hours per school year. To receive credit for hours worked at previous schools, the Community Service documents must be submitted, reviewed, and approve

Senior Night, October 4 (Thursday)

Water polo family,

Sorry for the delayed update, but lots of moving parts this weekend.

Thanks!!

First off, thanks to all the parents that provide such fantastic home game support. I know running a desk can be frustrating as well as nerve-racking. But for the folks that have crossed that bridge, you are now very good at what you do and our home games run very smoothly. Keep up the great work.

Second, to the parents, especially Yvonne Thompson, for never accepting "can't" as an answer, as we killed it at Chipotle, raising $617.83. This would not have happened without her persistence and the willingness of a cadre of parents who camped out in front of the restaurant to encourage patrons to say the right thing...

Lastly, thanks to the parents that ventured to Clovis with the girls team. Especially Susan Cates and Kelly Vanni, who helped "herd the cats", as they say. In addition, Susan was chief organizer and Kelly was pressed into service to manage our books for her first time (she did great).

Last Week's Recap

There was lots of water polo played last week. So just a short summary of the games.

Girls versus Notre Dame, W 17-4

This game was played in the big pool at Hartnell. Despite a sluggish start to the game, the girls used their superior swim capability and stifling defense to easily win 17-4. Scoring was spread evenly between Erika Cates (5), Ashley Harding (4), KK Brolin (4) and Ellie Pickford (3).

Girls versus El Diamante, L 3-7

El D was a big and physical team. But, this game was case of less than great shooting against a good defense / goalie. Without much ability to muster goals, even the best defense was not going to win.

Girls versus Sanger, W 5-3

Coming back from their previous loss, the Mustangs continued their relentless "drop" defense, all but shutting out the hopes of Sanger. The girls won on the back of Erika Cates' 3 goals.

Girls versus Garces Memorial, L 4-6

In probably the most physical game of the tournament, our girls were unable to outlast their opponent. With two Mustangs fouled out, we were left without any substitutes and did well to keep it close.

Girls versus Central, W 7-5

In what was undoubtedly their shining moment, The Mustangs overcame adversity and physical play. Being down two starters, it was a tall order to overcome yet another very physical team. Typifying the toughness of these girls was Ellie Pickford, who despite taking an inadvertent elbow to the face, and having to be removed from the pool because of bleeding from the nose, toughed it out, and came back into the game and scored 2 of the last 3 goals. Overall, the Mustangs score the last 4 goals of the game refusing to be beat. Everyone played terrific defense, and Ashley Harding stepped way up to lead the team with 4 goals. KK Brolin also scored once.

Boys versus SLV, L 9-18

The team from SLV was able to overpower our young Mustangs, jumping out to an early 8-1 lead. Our boys were never really able to recover and make a game of it, but scoring came from across the team, with Nicky Franco gets 3 tallies, Adam Thompson 2 and one each from Lucas Bissell, Logan Flores, Brandon Smith and Race Thompson.

Boys JV versus SLV, 4-13

The team from SLV just had too many bodies. Being able to substitute at will, the difference in level of tired became obvious and our boys undoing.

Boys versus Palma, L 7-12

In hopes of revenging the overtime loss in the first game of the season, the Mustangs took on Palma at Hartnell College. I mention this because it is a big pool relative to our own. Down a number of players due to illness and absence, the depth of Palma eventually showed through. GHS jumped out to a 2-0 lead but was down 3-7 by halftime and was never able to mount a meaningful charge thereafter. Nicky Franco continued his scoring parade, hitting pay dirt on 5 occasions.
